This is primarily the story of the longtime friendship between Dorothea Dix and Dr Stribling as told by them in their unedited letters The letters are preceded by summaries of their life experiences at the time their friendship began Dix was the most politically active and welltraveled woman her time She enlarged or founded thirtytwo mental hospitals in fifteen states and other countries fifteen schools for the feebleminded a school for the blind and several training schools for nurses Dix successfully petitioned Congress to create the Government Hospital for the Insane in Washington D C Dix petitioned Congress in 1854 to sell twelve million acres of public land whose proceeds would befit the insane blind and paupers throughout the nation After it was passed by Congress but then vetoed by Congress a devastated Dix too ill to work traveled to England to recuperate By the late 60s Western State and similar institutions were filled with incurable patients leaving little room for those who could be cured By 1871 only eight of Striblings patients were expected to be cured twentysix others were doubtful and the remaining three hundred and six patients were decidedly unfavorable The situation was depressing for Stribling his staff and the caretakers who constantly drew on their skills energies and goodness of heart to soothe patients depressed spirits and replace their delusions with pleasant thoughts It would have been far easier to restore curable patients who would be in the hospital only for the brief duration of their illness Stribling died in 1974 Because of his crusade to cure the insane in the South he had been one of the most influential Virginians of his time Dix continued her crusade until the Civil war when she became head of the Union nurses Afterwards she resumed her efforts to help those who could not help themselves Dix died on July 17 1887 at the New Jersey State Hospital at Trenton

Dorothea Dix was the most politically engaged woman of her generation which was itself a remarkable tapestry of activists An influential lobbyist as well as a paragon of the doctrine of female benevolence she vividly illustrated the complexities of the separate spheres of politics and femininity Her greatest legislative initiative a campaign for federal land grants to endow state mental hospitals assumed a central role in the public land controversies that intertwined with the slavery issues in Congress following the Mexican War The passage of this legislation in 1854 and its subsequent veto by President Pierce touched off the most protracted effort to override a veto that had yet taken placeAn activist who disdained the womens rights and antislavery movements Dix an oldline Whig sought to promote national harmony and became the only New England social reformer to work successfully in the lower South right up to the eve of secession When war broke out she sought to achieve as Superintendent of Women Nurses the sort of cultural authority she had seen Florence Nightingale win in the same role during the Crimean War The disastrous failure of one of the most widely admired heroines in the nation provides a dramatic measure of the transformations of northern values during the war

The full study of Bacon as a writer Dr Vickers takes into account the whole corpus of Bacons work in Latin as well as in English His chief sources are the The Advancement of Learning and the Essays His purpose is to reinstate Bacon as one of the supreme masters of English prose in a period which made rich use of all the expressive resources of the medium The study is both analytical and historical it isolates the major features of Bacons style and sets them in the context of Renaissance theory and practice The features include the overall structure of Bacons works his important concept of the aphorism and his use of the traditional patterns of syntax Dr Vickers makes a challenging reassessment of the accepted view of Bacon as a Senecan or antiCiceronian prose writer Particular attention is paid to imagery in which Bacons powers as an imaginative writer are greatest There are two general chapters the first being the problem of analysing style the last on reactions to Bacons style since the seventeenth century This book also provides the basis for a fresh assessment of Renaissance prose

The Francis A Schaeffer Trilogy

Few Christians have had a greater impact during the last half of the twentieth century than Dr Francis A Schaeffer A man with a remarkable breadth of cultural interest with penetrating insight into modern life and with a clear sense of spiritual reality Schaeffer was also a man who cared deeply about people and their search for truth and reality in their livesWith the publication of this Trilogy Dr Schaeffers three foundational books are available for the first time in one volume Schaeffer himself considered these three books to be essential to everything he wrote twentythree books in all and it is here especially that we see his ability to understand the deep need of modern man for truth beauty and meaning in lifeIn the first book The God Who Is There Schaeffer shows how modern thought has abandoned the idea of truth with tragic consequences in every area of culturefrom philosophy to art to music to theology and within culture as a wholeEscape from Reason the second book explains especially how the disintegration of modern life and culture grows from corrupted roots that reach far into the pastIn the last book He Is There and He Is Not Silent Schaeffer contrasts the silence and despair of modern life with the Christian answer that God can indeed be known because He is there and He is not silent In addition to the convenience of having Schaeffers three foundational books in one volume the Trilogy is especially valuable in that it uses the text revised and updated by Schaeffer shortly before his deathWhy was Schaeffer able to understand and communicate so effectively to a generation The best way to know is to find out firsthand by reading his essential works as found in this Trilogy Few who begin this journey will come to the end without having their life profoundly changed

Stephen Skinner has been interested in magic for as long as he can remember He wrote with Francis King the classic Techniques of High Magic in 1976 He followed that with Oracle of Geomancy and Terrestrial Astrology which has become the standard work on Western divinatory geomancy Books on Nostradamus and Millennium Prophecies followed in highly illustrated editions Stephen is also the author of eight books on feng shui including the first one written in English in the 20th century In the 1970s he was responsible for stimulating interest in John Dee and Enochian magic by publishing the first reprint of Casaubons True and Faithful Relation of What Passed for Many Yeers between Dr John Dee and some Spirits and Dr Donald Laycocks key reference book on the angelic language The Complete Enochian Dictionary With David Rankine he discovered what happened to Dees most important manuscript his personal book of angelic invocations which he kept in Latin and how it was preserved and developed in the 17th century into a full working Enochian system Only ten percent of this material reached the unpublished archives of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and even this was then suppressed by the chiefs of the Order so it did not appear in Israel Regardies monumental work on the Order rituals and documents They have also traced the routes down which were passed the classic techniques of invocation and evocation from late mediaeval grimoires through Dees magic via Ashmole and the aristocratic angel magicians of the 17th century and Frederick Hockley to the senior magicians of the Golden Dawn
